Non-White and BIPOC Care
At Sunrise Nutrition, we are pleased to offer therapy and nutrition services for Non-white, Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, Multi-racial, Pacific Islander, and People of Color or BIPOC. Whether you’re struggling with an eating disorder, would like to improve your nutrition, or hope to open up about your day-to-day struggles, our compassionate team of clinicians and therapists are here to help. We pride ourselves on being an anti-racist, fat-positive organization that offers a brave and accountable space for BIPOC and Non-White peoples to celebrate their bodies and identities free of stigma.
We understand that you have a unique experience with food, body image, and therapy. This unique experience is a result of systemic racism, generational trauma, oppression, and nutritional disparities that marginalize black and brown bodies. Therefore, we make it a top priority to customize our therapy and nutrition sessions to your lived experience through a trauma-informed lens. At the end of the day, our goal is to help you become your most authentic self through cultural foods and nutritional choices that are right for your body and heritage.
LGBTQ+ Care
If you are a member of the LQBTQIA+ community and are living with an eating disorder, body image issues or simply need to open up to someone, our caring team of dietitians and therapists are an invaluable resource. With anti-racism, weight-positivity, gender affirmation being our core values, we accept and empower all queer and gender identities through our therapy and nutrition services.. Our primary goal is to provide gender and self-affirming care, to help you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin so that you have the freedom to live the life you deserve.
Since your thoughts, feelings, and experiences about your body and appearance are unique, we’ll design an individualized treatment plan that enables you to move toward a more peaceful state. Our clinicians and therapists have extensive experience working with members of the LGBTQ+ and relentlessly strive to approach both therapy and nutrition sessions from a trauma-informed lens, creating an environment where our clients feel seen and heard.
Eating Disorder Treatment in Seattle
Our multicultural counseling services in Seattle include care for all types of eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorders. Many individuals with eating disorders experience trauma as a result of oppressive systems. Our team approaches eating disorder treatment from a trauma-informed lens. During either your therapy or nutrition session, you’ll unpack your previous history with food and eating, learn about proper nutrition, how to develop a consistent eating schedule, and what you can do to nourish your body while honoring cultural needs, background, and gender identity.
While traditional eating disorder treatments often focus on eating certain amounts of food and increasing calories, our therapists and dieticians will help you build a sustainable relationship with food that aligns with your culture, heritage and supports your gender identity or affirmation.
Nutritional Counseling in Seattle
The BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities are often overlooked when it comes to nutritional counseling and advice. They face cultural and systemic barriers that lack understanding of their unique needs and struggles when working with nutrition coaches or doctors.
Our nutritional counseling services give you the knowledge and tools you need to develop a caring, sustainable relationship with food while honoring your unique self. Our dietitians and nutritionists will work alongside you to help you discover what foods make your body feel good and how you can integrate intuitive eating and attainable nutritional practices into your everyday life.
Our clinicians are deeply committed to understanding the racial, socio-economical, and gender disparities in the health and nutrition industry, as well as having an awareness of the unique circumstances that affect members of these marginalized communities. We are actively anti-racist, fat-positive, queer, and transgender affirming, and proud of it!
Therapy in Seattle
At Sunrise Nutrition, we offer a non-judgmental environment where you can accept and work to overcome your anxiety. During anxiety therapy, we’ll work to determine the source of your anxiety, where it stems from, and how it affects your day-to-day life. Then, your therapist will create a personalized treatment plan that will help you better manage your stress and anxiety levels.
Our primary goal is to provide you with the coping strategies and tools you need to tackle any challenge life may throw your way. While it is impossible to eliminate all stress and anxiety, developing coping tactics and working to lower your daily anxiety levels is possible. No matter who you are or where you are, you will surely benefit from our compassionate approach and expert advice for anxiety and stress.
Body Image Therapy in Seattle
We know the pressure that the BIPOC, Non-White, and LQBTQ+ communities feel when it comes to conforming to mainstream body image or appearance standards. This creates an environment where many people in these communities feel ashamed of their bodies or potentially see themselves as less than. If you struggle with appreciating your body and physical appearance, body image therapy could improve your life. At Sunrise Nutrition, we’ll explore the underlying causes of your body image issues and unpack how it relates to your cultural heritage, family background, gender identity, and sexuality. We’ll also explore how these interact with our culture’s oppressive systems and, together, work towards your most authentic self.
While your treatment plan will depend on your unique situation and needs, you can expect it to challenge and unlearn harmful thoughts and behaviors about your body while helping you learn how to develop consistent self-care routines and nutritional practices. Being that we are an anti-racist, fat-positive, queer, and transgender affirming organization, our clinicians understand the complex nuances that accompany being a part of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and what obstacles they face in regard to body image.

Multi-cultural Counseling FAQs
-
The reality is a lot of science is rooted in white bodies and white supremacy. Subsequently, our current medical system is built around the BMI, which is an inherently racist and misogynistic measuring tool. These standards are applied to everyone and don’t take everyone’s heritage, genetics, lived experience, oppression, and cultural needs into consideration. At Sunrise Nutrition, we realize this and tailor our programs specifically to the BIPOC and LQBTQ+ individuals we serve.
-
The media often paints a picture that only white girls of a certain socio-economic status suffer from eating disorders. However, the truth is eating disorders don’t necessarily “look” like anything. An eating disorder can happen to anyone, regardless of weight, body type, race, culture, heritage, or socioeconomic status. Additionally, there are increased stereotypes and prejudices that BIPOC have to navigate through that many therapists and counselors lack first-hand experience in, making it difficult for BIPOC to feel heard and understood.
-
Yes. In fact, research has shown that more than half of young LGBTQ+ people between the ages of 13 and 24 have been diagnosed with an eating disorder. Unfortunately, our experience is that many people in the queer community are underdiagnosed and undertreated for eating concerns due to stigma, medical neglect, or difficulty accessing care.
-
There are unique stressors that LGBTQ+ individuals face in our society. These stressors can lead to eating disorders, substance abuse, and other challenging coping mechanisms. Some of them include discrimination, internalizing negative messages, harmful stereotypes, bullying, and living in fear of being harassed. Often, queer folks will turn to their relationship with food as a coping mechanism for having to navigate a culture that can be unkind to LQBTQ+ individuals and groups.

This includes women and non-binary individuals, fat or higher-weight people, persons with cognitive impairments or special needs, and immigrants.
